The Humidity Battle

When owning a heated indoor pool there is always a constant battle between pool temperature, running costs, pool room humidity, room temperature and ventilation.

Regardless of which heating method you choose to heat your pool, indoor pools have an issue that outdoor pools do not suffer. Once the pool has been heated the indoor spaces suffer from heat buildup from the warm moisture-laden air (latent heat) evaporating off the pool. This heat & moisture build up comes with assortment of issues.

Often multiple systems are purchased over time to resolve these issues.

  • Pool heater (Gas, Solar, Heat Pump)
  • Insulation
  • Air-conditioner
  • Ventilation
  • Dehumidifier
  • Pool blankets

However, what is not understood is the correlation between these systems and how installing one dramatically can affect the others.

The Sweat Box Effect

Heat & Humidity Damage

First thing you need to understand is that the heat off the pool is in the form of warm moisture laden air (evaporation), and is the single biggest heat loss from a pool. This will heat the pool room area as well as directly increase the humidity levels of the indoor space.

Humidity and heat can cause a very uncomfortable sweat-box feeling for non-swimmers. It can also produce moisture build up on windows, walls, ceilings and cause on-going damage of rusting, mildew and rotting to occur.

Air Conditioning & Space Air Heating

To counter the heat and humidity issues the purchase of air-conditioning systems are considered. By providing heat to the pool room close to the pool temperature provides the best results.

Space Heating

Space heating systems are usually gas or electric based systems. These days they also use a process known as preheating air. Used to remove any humidity from outside air prior to pushing the warm air into the space. This can be a very effective but expensive method.

Ventilation

Unlike Air-conditioning ventilation is a critical requirement of indoor pools, not just for fresh air, it also helps to passively reduce chlorimides, heat and humidity.

Australian Standards state that indoor pools require a certain degree of fresh air and ventilation. please see your state regulations as it varies state to state.

Ventilation can come from either passive or active forms.

  • Passive: Windows and doors, Vents and Whirly Birds
  • Active:   Air Fans, Ventilation systems and Extraction fans.

Although ventilation is crucial to good pool room heath, there is a trade off between standards requirements, people’s creature comfort and what is affordable.

As you increase ventilation levels to improve comfort for swimmers & non-swimmers, you also increase evaporation levels of the pool which directly increases the heat energy demand on the pool.

Dehumidification

Even though air-conditioning and ventilation go a long way to remove heat and humidity form the pool environment, they are often not effective enough at removing latent moisture in the air and the use of a dehumidifier is engaged.

These work by drawing air through an evaporator – condenser circuit system. The act of evaporation and condensing causes moisture to come out of the air in the form of condensate.

dehumidification - Solution Information - PCVER

The use of a dehumidification system is very effective way of actively reducing the humidity levels and some provide a method to increase airflow across the pool room space as well.

However, the use of such a system again increases the running cost of the pool. If you are also using air-conditioning or active ventilation your pool running costs could now be triple the original cost.

Energy Wastage

As we have seen, once you start utilising air heating, dehumidification, and space ventilation the pool heating running costs will rise. Also, once you add the additional running costs of all the equipment implemented your monthly bill can be quite extensive.

Also, pool heating and space conditioning is a continuous battle with nature and most systems just produce wasted heat energy and is typically just ejected straight out into the environment & lost, just to be replaced again later with a new source of heat.

Together they do not provide a very green or sustainable solution
and Energy lost is just money thrown away.

A True Green Environmental Venting System

Toyesi has spent much research in developing a system to battle these indoor pool issues, but at the same time help reduce running costs, and significantly reduce wasted energy losses, yet provide a system with a significantly lower capital equipment costs than buying multitude of equipment to achieve the same results.

When you consider these capital costs.

  • Pool heater $5000 to $20,000 +
  • Air-conditioner $5000 to $20,000 +
  • Ventilation $1000 to $10,000 +
  • Dehumidifier $5000 to $20,000 +

Tacit Knowledge at its Best

With experience dating back to 1989 Toyesi has been building and designing Heat Pumps solutions to suit a wide range of problems. One of these solutions was to use the pool heat pump in a special configuration and allow one unit to provide a multiple function system that can provide:

  • Energy capture & reuse
  • Ventilation – Active and Passive
  • Temperature control – space cooling
  • Reusable clean condensate water – great for top up pool water.
  • Dehumidification – Humidity reduction
  • Pool Heating
  • Running cost reduction – & the best bang for buck

How Does This Work

Dehumidification & Ventilation

Using the coupling of a heat pump with dehumidification technology, we can draw air from the pool room, remove some of the latent moisture from the air, and create significant airflow by venting back the cooler drier air.

Energy capture & Pool Heating

At the same time, we capture the heat load that was lost from the pool utilising our heat pump technology and apply it directly back into the pool where it belongs. This process also increases our heat pump efficiencies, which also adds to reducing overall running costs.

Capital and Running Cost Savings

Utilising our efficient PCVER system to do the work of a pool heater, ventilator, dehumidifier and pool room temperature manager, we can significantly reduce the overall capital equipment outlay. Also, overall running costs will be much lower due to only having to run one efficient system.

“No system or combination of systems can manage the variables associated with
pool and space heating as we fight against mother nature”.
However, the PCVER system goes a long way to solve several issues in one system.
