Regardless if it is a home project or a commercial project the success of most hydroponic & aquaponic systems is controlling the temperature of the cicrulating water.
For hydroponic projects, controlling the root temperature is critical for the life, growth, and general well-being of plants. Plants have the ability to regulate their temperature through their leaves and have perspiration just like humans sweat. However, the root system lacks this ability. Thus controlling the optimal water temperature can have significant benefits for your plants.
Aquaponics projects are very exciting as it provides a real ecosystem where the fish provides waste material to fertilise and feed the plants, and the plants act as the water cleaner for the fish. However, you now have two areas to control. Different fish species require different temperatures and so do different plants, and it is important to try and match these up as closely as possible for true succes of both.
Toyesi has been developing heat pump and chiller solutions for over 10 years designed specifically for the aquaculture and horticulture industries. High-end quality purpose-built Trident TAC heater chillers.
However, with many smaller ventures and backyard systems popping up, we knew our new Platypus and Platypus Mini heater chillers fulfilled much of the heating and cooling needs for these projects.
The Platypus Mini systems are ideal for most backyard hydroponic & aquaponic systems. With 3 modes, heating only, cooling only, and auto mode you have full control over what you need.
With the auto mode providing both heating and cooling you will be able to select your ideal temperature range for both your plants and fish all year round. Almost just set and forget.
The Platypus Mini has a wide temperature range from 8 degrees to 40 degrees allowing temperature control for a very wide plant and fish range. With a Titanium heat exchanger, the Platypus range can hand both fresh and salt water projects.
Unit Selection & Sizing Tables
All hydroponic and aquaponic systems can be affected by the location, ambient temperature, desired temperature, and the use of covers amongst many other factors. The below guides are based on 27°C temperature and the tabulated “Litres of Water” is an estimated volume guide and is there only as a suggested unit size guide. Commercial projects with high use should always seek a sizing estimate.

The Platypus Mini range of heat pumps offers one of the smallest heater chillers available. This offers a unique offering to anyone with an aquarium and or operates in aquaculture. Most chillers only chill the water requiring alternative heating solutions, like heater drop elements or a 2nd heat pump for heating the tanks. Having a small heater chiller allows for accurate water temperature control.
The Platypus range comes with a titanium heat exchanger making them suitable for both fresh and saltwater projects. These units have been utilised for many small aquarium features and small test aquatic research projects as well as small hatcheries and Laval tanks.
The Platypus Mini units also can be set in heating only, cooling only, and Auto for full temperature control. Designed with all the efficiency and power of heat pumps but in a compact (approx. 40mm cube) design.

Toyesi started building heat pumps in 1989 to supply the pool industry. However, after working with many aquaculture industry experts, it was clear to us that the aquaculture requirements for heat pumps and chillers could not be met with just repurposed pool heat pump solutions. We began using thick-walled titanium heat exchangers, 316 stainless steel chassis, and baked-on epoxy coil coatings among their key features. The idea in mind was to create heat pumps and chillers that would have longevity and reduced downtimes. Keeping the fight alive became very important to us.
Since then all our units from the smallest unit to the largest units have all been built with quality construction, efficiency, and long life expectancy in mind. We now have hundreds of units right across Australia with well over 10+ years in tenure and many with well over 20 years of working life and are still in operation today.
Due to the quality of workmanship and being designed and built here in Sydney Australia, the Toyesi units are priced accordingly. However, when you consider the 10 to 20-year anticipated life span and problem-free heating or cooling experience our customers enjoy, we find that our units more than pay for themselves and offer outstanding value for money.

Do yourself a Favour – Invest Shade Cover
There is always the battle in hydroponics and aquaponics with extreme heat and extreme cold. Although the Platypus and Trident heat pump ranges go a long way to resolve these temperature issues. The environment will have a huge impact on your system.
Shade cover over summer is as critical as your heat pump use. This could be trees, bushes, shade cloth, or other forms of shading. The sun provides almost 1000 Watts of heat per square metre of your system. Shade cloth can reduce this significantly, whilst still allowing important UV and light through.
Poly Houses are also worth considering especially over winter to actually trap the sun’s heat and keep it in.
So there are many things to consider. but the main thing is to grow and develop as your budget allows. But with a little bit of ingenuity, you will be having fresh food on your plate all year round.
