Importance or Root Temperature Control

Plants have an amazing ability to change respiration rates in the attempt to minimise the impact of changing ambient conditions. However, their achillies heel is their root systems.

Root systems of plants lack the same capability to regulate its own temperature, and if the root temperature drops or raises too high the roots cannot provide the plant with water and nutrients, which significantly can reduce plant growth and health.

In nature the soil is a great buffer to the changes in  ambient temperature, but in a hydroponic or NFT system the roots can become highly susceptible to ambient temperatures.

Depending on your set up, it can be impossible or impractical to control ambient temperatures all year round. However, by setting up your NFT system with a Toyesi Transthermal Smart Heat Pump you can maintain your nutrient rich circulation water all year round for optimum growth potential.

Effects of Temperature

  • Temperature can be an important and potentially limiting factor in growing plants in any NFT System.
  • Low Root Temperatures can hamper water & Nutrient uptake by roots.
  • High Root Temperatures can unduly stress plants and damage root systems.
  • Ideal Temperatures around 26oC water temperature will have amazing benefits – shorten germination times and speed up growth of seedlings.

Vegetables & Extending Seasons

Vegetables can be loosely grouped according to their growing season.

  • Cool Season Vegetables: Grow best when temperatures are between 10-20 degrees C or even lower. They include: broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, onions, peas, spinach and turnips.
  • Intermediate Season Vegetables: These are best between temperatures of 15-25 degrees. Include: beetroot, carrot, parsnip, celery, leek, lettuce, radish, silver beet.
  • Warm Season vegetables: Are grown best when temperatures are above 20 degrees C. Include: Beans, capsicum, eggplant, potato, sweet corn, sweet potato, tomato and cucurbits (including cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins etc.)

So to extend the seasons is to control or mimic the temperature and light conditions of the seasons that the plants grow best in. Heating the roots, and controlling ambient temperatures is one of the best ways to achieve this.
