Hydroponic & Aquaponic Systems
🌿 Why Temperature Control Is the Heartbeat of Hydroponics & Aquaponics
Whether you’re growing in your backyard or scaling up for commercial success, one truth remains: the temperature of your circulating water can make or break your system.
💧 Hydroponics: Root Health Starts Below the Surface
Plants are clever—they regulate their temperature through their leaves, even perspiring like we do. But their roots? They rely entirely on the water around them. That’s why maintaining the right root-zone temperature is essential for vibrant growth, strong immunity, and consistent yields. When roots are happy, plants thrive.
🐟 Aquaponics: A Living Partnership Between Fish and Plants
Aquaponics is more than just growing—it’s a living ecosystem. Fish produce nutrient-rich waste that feeds the plants, and in return, the plants purify the water for the fish. But here’s the challenge: fish and plants each have their own ideal temperature zones. Matching species and crops thoughtfully—and keeping water temperatures in balance—is key to harmony and success.
🌡️ Smart Climate Control = Thriving Systems
Whether you’re cultivating leafy greens, herbs, or ornamental fish, precise temperature control helps you unlock the full potential of your setup. It’s not just about comfort—it’s about creating an environment where every living element can flourish.

🌱 Platypus Mini: Smart Climate Control for Thriving Backyard Ecosystems
Whether you’re nurturing leafy greens or raising happy fish, the Platypus Mini is your go-to climate companion for backyard hydroponic and aquaponic setups. Designed with simplicity and versatility in mind, it offers three intuitive modes—Heating, Cooling, and Auto—giving you full control over your system’s temeprature control.
💧 Set It, Forget It, Grow All Year
With Auto Mode, the Platypus Mini seamlessly switches between heating and cooling to maintain your ideal temperature range—keeping both plants and fish in their happy zone, no matter the season.
🌡️ Wide Temperature Range, Endless Possibilities
From a crisp 8°C to a balmy 40°C, the Platypus Mini supports a diverse mix of crops and aquatic life. Whether you’re growing herbs, lettuce, or tropical fish, this unit adapts to your vision.
🌊 Built for Fresh & Salt Water Projects
Although best suited to fresh water projects, thanks to its Titanium heat exchanger, the Platypus Mini handles both fresh and saltwater environments with ease—making it perfect for creative growers who like to experiment.

Unit Selection & Sizing Tables
All hydroponic and aquaponic systems can be affected by the location, ambient temperature, desired temperature, and the use of covers amongst many other factors. The below guides are based on 27°C temperature and the tabulated “Litres of Water” is an estimated volume guide and is there only as a suggested unit size guide. Commercial projects with high use should always seek a sizing estimate.
Heat Pump Ranges listed:
- Platypus Mini Range – 2 kW to 5 kW
- Toyesi TAC Commercial Range – 6 kW to 58 kW (And larger)

Platypus Mini Heater Chiller
The Platypus Mini range of heat pumps offers one of the smallest heater chillers available. This offers a unique offering to anyone with an aquarium and or operates in aquaculture. Most chillers only chill the water requiring alternative heating solutions, like heater drop elements or a 2nd heat pump for heating the tanks. Having a small heater chiller allows for accurate water temperature control.
The Platypus range comes with a titanium heat exchanger making them suitable for both fresh and saltwater projects. These units have been utilised for many small aquarium features and small test aquatic research projects as well as small hatcheries and Laval tanks.
The Platypus Mini units also can be set in heating only, cooling only, and Auto for full temperature control. Designed with all the efficiency and power of heat pumps but in a compact (approx. 40mm cube) design.

Trident Heat Pumps
Toyesi started building heat pumps in 1989 to supply the pool industry. However, after working with many aquaculture industry experts, it was clear to us that the aquaculture requirements for heat pumps and chillers could not be met with just repurposed pool heat pump solutions. We began using thick-walled titanium heat exchangers, 316 stainless steel chassis, and baked-on epoxy coil coatings among their key features. The idea in mind was to create heat pumps and chillers that would have longevity and reduced downtimes. Keeping the fight alive became very important to us.
Since then all our units from the smallest unit to the largest units have all been built with quality construction, efficiency, and long life expectancy in mind. We now have hundreds of units right across Australia with well over 10+ years in tenure and many with well over 20 years of working life and are still in operation today.
Due to the quality of workmanship and being designed and built here in Sydney Australia, the Toyesi units are priced accordingly. However, when you consider the 10 to 20-year anticipated life span and problem-free heating or cooling experience our customers enjoy, we find that our units more than pay for themselves and offer outstanding value for money.
Easy to install and simple to maintain, you’ll find the Toyesi's Trident heat pumps a pleasure to work with. Regardless of the site’s landscaping or site design. Trident has over 40 different standard model capacities from 4 kW – 440 kW in both outdoor and in-plant models; with either end, side, or vertical fan discharge configurations available. Trident heat pumps are also all heater chiller units offering superior water temperature control.

Do yourself a Favour – Invest Shade Cover
There is always the battle in hydroponics and aquaponics with extreme heat and extreme cold. Although the Platypus and Trident heat pump ranges go a long way to resolve these temperature issues. The environment will have a huge impact on your system.
Shade cover over summer is as critical as your heat pump use. This could be trees, bushes, shade cloth, or other forms of shading. The sun provides almost 1000 Watts of heat per square metre of your system. Shade cloth can reduce this significantly, whilst still allowing important UV and light through.
Poly Houses are also worth considering especially over winter to actually trap the sun’s heat and keep it in.
So there are many things to consider. but the main thing is to grow and develop as your budget allows. But with a little bit of ingenuity, you will be having fresh food on your plate all year round.
