Each system is sized according to your specific conditions: usage patterns, ambient temperature, ramp time, desired water temperature, and overall heat load.
Domestic vs Commercial Cold Plunge Pools
Sizing a cold plunge pool isn’t one-size-fits-all. Domestic systems, typically used once or twice a day, allow for long recovery times—making smaller chillers viable. In contrast, commercial systems face continuous use with little to no recovery time. Each person entering the pool contributes approximately 300 to 400 watts of thermal energy, demanding a significantly larger and more robust system. Read more on sizing

Unit Selection & Sizing Tables
All home plunge pool chillers can be affected by the pool’s location, ambient temperature, desired pool temperature, and the use of pool covers amongst many other factors. The below guides are based on 10°C pool temperature and the tabulated “Litres of Water” is an estimated pool volume guide and is there only as a suggested unit size guide. Commercial pools or pools with high personal use should always seek a sizing estimate.

Platypus Mini Heater Chiller
The Platypus Mini range of heat pumps offers one of the smallest heater chillers available. This offers a unique offering to anyone with an aquarium and or operates in aquaculture. Most chillers only chill the water requiring alternative heating solutions, like heater drop elements or a 2nd heat pump for heating the tanks. Having a small heater chiller allows for accurate water temperature control.
The Platypus range comes with a titanium heat exchanger making them suitable for both fresh and saltwater projects. These units have been utilised for many small aquarium features and small test aquatic research projects as well as small hatcheries and Laval tanks.
The Platypus Mini units also can be set in heating only, cooling only, and Auto for full temperature control. Designed with all the efficiency and power of heat pumps but in a compact (approx. 40mm cube) design.

With a focused design on ice baths and cold plunge pools, but with the capability of 40-degree temperatures, the IC 9000 All-in-One chiller is suitable for small backyard pools, cold pools, or spas.
The Platypus IC900 offers unique features that include an internal water pump, ozone filter, and cartridge filter. The IC 9000 offers features that many other chillers on the market do not. Although designed with a focus on chilling, the IC 9000 also supports a reverse-cycle heating option. allowing you to heat a small spa up to 38 Degrees.
The IC 9000 chiller is well suited for a cool 8 to 15-degree plunge pool or for the keen enthusiast to take things down a notch to as low as 3 Degrees for a true ice bath experience. The IC 9000 comes coupled with our plunge pools or as a stand-alone solution supporting your home plunge pool.

Chiller Safety Notice
When setting plunge pool temperatures below 8°C, caution is essential. Chillers operate with refrigerant temperatures approximately 6°C colder than the water, meaning internal components may be exposed to near-freezing conditions. If water freezes, it expands—potentially blocking or cracking heat exchangers.
Toyesi units include digital antifreeze protection to help prevent freeze damage. However, many systems do not. Never restrict or shut off water flow while the unit is running, as this can lead to serious damage.

Plunge Pool Chillers or Spa Heat Pumps
Coldwater plunge pools for most of us are a scary thing. In fact, going in water lower than 20 degrees Celsius is a cold usually only the avid ocean surfer or swimmer goes through. Yet over the last decade or so the health benefits of cold water bathing have now become the go-to solution for many athletes, health gurus, and rehabilitation experts. However much can also be said about the benefits of a warm heated spa up at 38 degrees. Easing away muscle aches, relaxing or just hanging out for fun.
This is why our Platypus range of heat pumps and chillers are all heater chillers. Allowing you a unique flexibility to swap between spa and plunge.
However, to prevent thermal shock inside the heat pumps, please allow time between modes for the heat pump to stabalise & climatise to ambient conditions. This can be done by putting the heat pump in standby mode or turning it off.
Swapping from 8 degrees to 38 or from 38 back to 8 degrees will take time, and depending on the size of the unit and the size of the pool, this could be hours or even a day or two. For example for a 1,000L tub to go from 8 degrees to 38 degrees will take a 5kW heater at least 8 hours.
