Aquaculture Heat Pumps and Chillers
Toyesi’s range of aquaculture heat pumps and chillers have been designed to assist aquaculture projects from the smallest research project through to the large multi-tank system.
Unlike the swimming pool and other aquatic industries, where heating is the primary focus, or these days just chilling with cold plunge pools becoming popular, aquaculture heat pumps have to be able to manage a set point and perform both heating and cooling as required.
Our aquaculture heat pumps and chillers are just that – Heater chillers. By maintaining a set water temperature our units will automatically heat or chill as required.
Toyesi has a few different options to draw from. Toyesi’s own Trident Heat pumps, and our Platypus heat pump range. The Trident range was initially designed in conjunction with aquaculture industry experts over 10 years ago and incorporates superior quality componentry and was designed with efficiency, trouble-free operation, and a long lifecycle in mind.
The Trident range of aquaculture heat pumps and chillers uses 304 or 316 Stainless steel chassis, epoxy-coated coils, and/or hydrophilic-coated coils, high-grade commercial titanium heat exchangers, and other quality components to ensure efficiency, long life, and customer satisfaction.
For the more budget-focused clients we now offer our Platypus range of heater chillers. Still utilising quality components including titanium heat exchangers and blue hydrophilic coil coatings with a stylish ABS chassis bringing quality at a reduced price point.
Unit Selection & Sizing Tables
Aquaculture heat pumps and chillers’ heat load requirements can be affected by the aquaculture project’s location, ambient temperature, desired water temperature, indoor or outdoor tanks, the use of shade cloth or covers, heated rooms, high-use, and heat pump operating hours will all change the heat load of any project. The below-tabled information is just that, a guide. However, commercial aquaculture projects should always seek a sizing estimate. For example, a system in Tasmania will need more heating than a system in Northern Queensland, which would actually need more cooling.
The below guides are based on nominal heating and cooling system outputs and should only be used as a guide. Litres of water are based on cooling load only.
Heat Pump Ranges listed:
Platypus Mini Range – 2 to 5 kW
Platypus Commercial Range – 4 to 250 kW
Toyesi’s Trident Aquaculture Range – 6 to 400 kW

Platypus Mini Heater Chiller
Platypus Mini Heater Chiller
The Platypus Mini range of heat pumps offers one of the smallest heater chillers available. This offers a unique offering to anyone with an aquarium and or operates in aquaculture. Most chillers only chill the water requiring alternative heating solutions, like heater drop elements or a 2nd heat pump for heating the tanks. Having a small heater chiller allows for accurate water temperature control.
The Platypus range comes with a titanium heat exchanger making them suitable for both fresh and saltwater projects. These units have been utilised for many small aquarium features and small test aquatic research projects as well as small hatcheries and Laval tanks.
The Platypus Mini units also can be set in heating only, cooling only, and Auto for full temperature control. Designed with all the efficiency and power of heat pumps but in a compact (approx. 40mm cube) design.

Trident Heat Pumps
Trident Heat Pumps
Toyesi started building heat pumps in 1989 to supply the pool industry. However, after working with many aquaculture industry experts, it was clear to us that the aquaculture requirements for heat pumps and chillers could not be met with just repurposed pool heat pump solutions. We began using thick-walled titanium heat exchangers, 316 stainless steel chassis, and baked-on epoxy coil coatings among their key features. The idea in mind was to create heat pumps and chillers that would have longevity and reduced downtimes. Keeping the fight alive became very important to us.
Since then all our units from the smallest unit to the largest units have all been built with quality construction, efficiency, and long life expectancy in mind. We now have hundreds of units right across Australia with well over 10+ years in tenure and many with well over 20 years of working life and are still in operation today.
Due to the quality of workmanship and being designed and built here in Sydney Australia, the Toyesi units are priced accordingly. However, when you consider the 10 to 20-year anticipated life span and problem-free heating or cooling experience our customers enjoy, we find that our units more than pay for themselves and offer outstanding value for money.
Easy to install and simple to maintain, you’ll find the Toyesi's Trident heat pumps a pleasure to work with. Regardless of the site’s landscaping or site design. Trident has over 40 different standard model capacities from 4 kW – 440 kW in both outdoor and in-plant models; with either end, side, or vertical fan discharge configurations available. Trident heat pumps are also all heater chiller units offering superior water temperature control.

Superior Coil Corrosion Protection
There are many pre & post coating protection for evaporator/Condenser coils used in the HVAC & Heat Pump markets. They all provide a degree of protection covering different potential uses. The most common coatings used in today’s heat pump systems are standard gloss cover and blue coating (also known as Blue Fin Coating). However, more advanced heat pumps now use hydrophilic coatings or better still Epoxy coatings (sprayed on or for best performance dipped and baked on).
For fresh-water projects, the coating is less important, but for salt-water applications or for coastal locations the coating is paramount to the success and longevity of aquaculture heat pumps and chillers. Under salty conditions, it is highly recommended to use Epoxy or a hydrophobic coil. coating. This is why Toyesi has chosen to use Epoxy in its aquaculture heat pump specifications as a standard go-to coil coating.
Toyesi aquaculture heat pumps and chillers have used the “Baked on Dipped Epoxy Coating” as its preferred coating for over 10 years now. Best suited to any project where saltwater spray may be common, such as by the ocean, or for projects that use saltwater such as in aquaculture.
